Sword of the New World is a MMORPG where anime like characters are set in 17th century Europe. The game is subscription based and free to play. You can download the client and play for free but there will be a level cap of 20. The game offers the usual character classes: fighter, wizard, scout, musketeer, and elementalist. The gameplay doesn’t stand out from the rest of the MMORPGs out there. The quests are nothing spectacular for MMOs; stuff like fetch this for a reward or kill this.

So is there anything that makes this game different from other MMORPGs? There actually is. When you first start up the game, you will be taken to your quarters, which is like your character selection screen. You will soon find out that you will create a family from 3-5 characters and select 3 to control as a squad when playing the actual game. I personally enjoyed the idea of this party system. Of course, you can join up with a friend and play together. So you’ll have a party of 6.

Another thing I liked, but this is just my personal taste, is the character models, the clothing, and level design. Maybe it is because I’m a fan of anime so the character models appeal to me. The clothing is very different from what you will see in other MMOs. They are very pretty and detailed. If this wasn’t an MMO, it could have probably been a Sims-like ballroom party game. The level design, specifically the towns like Reboldoeux are nice; it is a bustling city with nice architecture. It even has a fashion designer (NPC), Andre, who sells costumes for level 70+ characters. On the downside, the places outside the city aren’t too pleasant. The level design outside the cities is boring and bland.

I’m not sure what to make of the monsters in this game. Two-legged hopping crocodiles? I’ll leave it at that.

In general, the graphics aren’t too great. I guess they are normal for free MMORPG games. Though I think the best sight to see is your family of characters all dressed up in your barracks.

Pros
+ Character and costume design are very pretty.
+ Cities look nice.
+ Musical score.

Cons
- Bland level design outside the cities.
- Quests are the same as other MMOs.

Overall Score: 60%

I tried the demo for this game and agree that the visuals are quite different. I think that some more commentary about gameplay would have been useful. How easy are multiple characters to control during combat? Does the game bog down with large numbers of characters on-screen?

I wish I posted some screenshots, but I was having issues logging on to their servers.

You can check out some screenshots on their official site (http://www.swordofthenewworld.com/) or on your favorite game review site.
