Even second-rate ports often look far better on a good PC. GTA4 came out a while ago for PC, and it looks FAR, FAR better than the x360 and PS3 versions.

Great article, but:

"As you can imagine, it’s a bit embarrassing when your competitor’s previous generation product is still considered to be the 3D performance champ."

I dont see how getting beat by a last-gen dual GPU card is embarrassing. Same thing happened to nvidia when their GTX 280 first came out....it was beaten many times by the 9800GX2. Now, if the GTX285 was beating the 5870 consistantly, then, yeah, it would be embarassing.

"In fact, it could possibly be the world's first 128-bit CPU."

Erm...I could be wrong, but wasnt the PS2 EE a 128-bit MIPS core at heart?

I've heard conflicting reports that the DCs SH4 was/was not 128-bit, but that would be another example.

How ironic they called it Fermi, since these new high end cards seem to need a small nuclear reactor in your PC to run properly.

Madden an "in-depth sports sim", LOL.

Somewhat, I was simply astonished to see how bad the graphics were for Madden 2010 on PS3...yes, at 720p. I couldnt believe how jaggy it looked and the washed out textures in the end zone....also, the amusing close-up of the QB's face on the phone actually has texture streaming problems. First you get a dull face, and then a second later, BAM, the detail texture pops in. Rather laughable how lame EA has gotten since they signed that NFLPA exclusivity license.

Bring back NFL2K!!!!

I'd hate to see the 'glowing red' power supply needed to run 4 285s + the rest of a high-end gaming system.

Are we near the point where 2 PSUs for one computer will be considered norm for the high end??? (shudder)

Please, somebody get PowerVR back into making desktop cards again. Or somebody else with a more efficient architecture.

Yeah, it seems quaint now, but the original Monkey Island VGA was easily one of the best looking games at the time on any system. I *think* it was the first game that looked noticably better on PC (VGA) than the Amiga version. Not bad for 5 years worth of technology improvements, LOL.

And even in crappy AdLib/OPLx form, the soundtrack still kicks ass to this day. I'm also one of the few that thinks MI2 absolutely pales in comparison to the first. Thats how great it was/is.

Nope, its indicated in the game's settings menu.....unless you add some commandline switches, it actually wont let you exceed the available memory/draw distance setting by much.

GTA4 is the only game I'm aware of that needs 1.5GB+ video memory to run maxxed out.

Dont get me wrong, even 47/100 draw distance is FAR superior to what you get on X360 and PS3, but it would be interesting to see what 100/100 looks like.

Again, if you love GTA 4, the 4GB (~2GB effective) memory can be utilized. I believe with all settings maxed (100/100 draw distance), GTA4 can use around 1600MB video memory.

Only game I'm aware of that can use that much vid memory though.

with my 1GB GTX280, I can only get 47/100 draw distance, which maxes out the available vid memory at like 997MB (48/100 uses like 1006, over the available limit).

Edit: Forgot to mention, I run 1680x1050, so if you run 1900 or higher, I'm sure it will use even more memory than above.

But thats what makes it right up Carmack's alley....when he ported DOOM to Jaguar, the console was headed for the landfill. He did it merely because he thought it was cool to code for a complex console. I *believe* he also coded the Quake 3 linux binaries because he said "linux gives me a hard-on". LOL

Hell, with DNF, he'd probably spin a profit as well. Although Doom on Jag sold relatively well (compared to other Jag titles), at the time, one could not expect to turn a profit coding for a dying system.

Since Carmack often does strange, geek-pleasing things in his free time (see Jag DOOM and Wolf3d ports, etc), wouldnt it be something if he took it upon himself to finish DNF?

"So I just painted a picture showing an OS release about every about 3 years and people are thinking it is being rushed off the market. When in fact it is because no OS release came halfway through the XP life cycle like it should have giving XP a 7 year shelf life"

It also SEEMS rushed since it has taken so long since Vista's debut, and so SOON before win7's apparent debut to 'iron out the kinks'.

Based on the excellent SP2 beta I've been running for a few months (v.217), it looks like I will *finally* be able to unquestionably recommend Vista64 to people when SP2 final is out. Unfortunately, by that time Win7 may be out. Vista may just get lost in the shuffle just as its getting very good.

Edit: Sorry, that should read "v.113" not "v.217"

I believe GTA4 can use 3 cores or more....notice how the slower quads beat the faster duals.

Well, it had some weird hardware bugs or design flaws like the audio processor would chew up a lot of bandwidth and so forth, but yeah, it was certainly easier to program for than the Saturn (once you get past the cart size limitations).

Its astonishing to me that Sony would take such a 'complexity' tactic with PS2/PS3, since what got them into the console race to begin with was that the original PSX was remarkably easy to program compared to its competitors (Saturn and N64).

Agreed---to this date, the legendary K7S5A was easily one of the most stable mobos I ever used. Sure, it had next to no tweaking options in the BIOS, but if you are looking for an overclocking monster, buy an ASUS, Gigabyte, or whatever.

Yes, I have installed it on Home Premium x64. No bugs encountered yet, and aero seems even snappier than SP1.

This is not to say some other configurations might not have problems, but I havent had a single one. You will get that annoying "evaluation version" watermark on the desktop unless you do what they recommend in the link.

They tried that once with the 3d0 Blaster....massive failure. Besides, to get a PS3 mobo/cell chipset on a card would never be able to be sold "at cost" and retail for $100 anytime soon, which was really the point of this article.

Sigh. Thanks Hector, you did a bang-up job.
