| » Poor information For a somewhat more technical site you guys should have included more tech info on RSX than simply that it's "NV47 based".
It's actually a 24 pipe G71, running at 500 mhz, with some minor cache increases so that it can texture from the PS3's XDR memory pool (rather than just the default GDDR pool).
In fact, it's actually 28 pipes! However, 4 are disabled for redundancy. Since pieces with a damaged quad cannot be sold as mid range the way a 20 pipe PC G71 will be sold as a 7900GT. If a quad on RSX is bad, they would be screwed if not for the extra quad built in to RSX over and above G71.
Also as another commenter has noted, 360 does not have only 12 GB available. There is some extra HD content (HD Titanic movie trailer I believe, for one) pre-loaded. I'm not sure what the GB's available is if you delete all the pre-loaded media, but it's more than 12 GB. Though overall, I definitly agree the tiny size of 360 HDD is a crime. Considering you pay $100 for it, they should have at least made it 40 GB.
Also, some more should have mentioned about how difficult it will be to tap Cell's multi-threading capabilities. All multi-threading is basically difficult, and Cell just makes adds an extra layer of complexity on top of that with it's asymetrical design. That was totally glossed over.
The 360 does many things right better than the PS3, but it's clear the PS3 does some things right that 360 doesn't. They include:
User upgradeable HDD.
How cool it runs.
HDMI out.
Built in wi-fi (though it should have been included in both PS3 models)
I also must take issue with the author's comment:
"Sony has managed to do the exact opposite of the Playstation 2 launch. They built up a fairly negative image and then released a really nice product. We're not talking Emotion Engine this time, the Cell is very impressive"
First, to deal with the particular, no, cell isn't very impressive. What is Cell doing, in a game now, that you can point to and go wow, there is a huge leap in CPU power that we have never seen before (as Sony's many fanboys in fact, PROMISED us with Cell)! Answer: nothing. The areas you look for CPU power are things like AI, animation and physics right? Where in the launch games are you seeing even above average uses of those? If anything, I've heard Resistance's AI is dog stupid. I can see for myself that Resistance's animation is pretty much, non-existant. Motorstorm would be one you could point to on the surface, but truly I dont even see it there. It has canned ragdoll crash sequences..big deal. The motorcycle rider animation in game, aka not crashing, is actually awful, not even average, but again basically the rider doesn't move at all or very stiffly. The rest of the launch games are strictly normal in any of these areas. The fact is Cell has proven nothing. Sony has a long history imo of garbage console engineering, while extremely difficult to develop for too boot, and Cell imo will probably follow those footsteps.
Next we deal with the general, "a really nice product" when we talk game consoles, ancillary function to me is not what we speak of. So for example, the fact it has Blu Ray, or built in wi-fi, or the other external accoutrements is minor compared to, how does it do by far it's most important job, graphics? And for that PS3 imo is a big, fat, huge, failure. The bottom line: It provides Xbox360 level of graphics in a console released a calender year later. Say what you want, that's simply inexcusable imo. Question yourself this, imagine how much more thrilled we'd all be with PS3 if it had a (vastly more powerful than RSX) G80 derivative in it instead? PS3 has all the outside shine, but that doesn't fool me. As usual for a Sony system, GIVEN ITS TIME FRAME, it's guts disappoint big time. And that's the bottom line.» Login to reply to this
