| | While I agree that the HD-DVD format is superior in audio and video quality over the standard DVD version, I am curious as to which machine listed in the test equipment was used for the upconvert. Reason being is that some of the equipment listed, although they do great for the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray in their price range, are not the best performers when it comes to upconverting standard DVDs. Even with HTPC and high end PCs with great video cards that do excellent upconvert, I've still noticed better upconvert output from my Oppo DV-981HD DVD player. Your standard DVD screenshots just look a little too smeared compared to what I see on my player and Sony 50A10 720P 3-LCD rear projection TV. Of course with any upconvert player, the output is still only going to be as good as what's going in. If it's a crappy DVD, it'll probably look worse. But if the quality is superb, that'll show a little better on the upconvert. In closing, maybe a little more detailed information as to what equipment was used for what and maybe the specs listed on the HTPC will benefit the readers when trying to anylize (spelled incorrectly on purpose due to filters blocking out the proper spelling) the comparison. » Login to reply to this

| | Question, if the so-called 'format-war' benefits from having competition (ie. drive down prices) - then why did the DVD format (one format) do SO well and is still doing very well? I don't see why the successor to DVD has to be fought over. I'll wait a few years until the dust has settled, thank you and good night. » Login to reply to this Anonymous (-) Oct 17, 2007 - 08:56 pm | Edited on Oct 17, 2007 - 09:00 pm
| | DVDs were a revolutionary upgrade from VHS tapes in interactivity and quality. DVDs are still "good enough" for the mainstream market, especially when prices are so low now. Many people won't notice a significant quality difference with the new HD formats with average-sized HDTVs at typical viewing distances. Or they don't appreciate the difference enough to pay the current prices. » Login to reply to this

| | Agree^ I got a 50" panasonic plasma in my bedroom and still not much of a difference. I mean its there, it's not that big of a jump from VHS to DVD (that was major). Either way both format (DVD / HD-DVD) is pretty clear. DVD is "good enough" good, visually there is no way an upscale DVD can ruin a movie experience. A DVD is already much clearer than watching it in theatres, so no complaints. » Login to reply to this GX-Alan (78) Oct 18, 2007 - 04:25 pm
| It also depends on how big your screen is. Most movie theaters at equivalent to 720p, with digital cinema theaters being equivalent to 1080p. By every measure, DVDs cannot be as good as the theaters. Blu-ray and HD DVD can.
The big difference (and this is coming up in a new article) is viewing distance. If you sit far enough from anything, you'll stop seeing the differences.» Login to reply to this |

| | Indeed. The author gets hyped about HD-DVD, but I don't really see myself paying extra for a little more clarity. The differences don't jump on your face, unlike DVD vs. VHS. I have a 1080P set, a PS3 and an upconverting DVD player. DVDs _ARE_ good enough :P (PS3 collects dust) » Login to reply to this |
