» Call of Duty: World at War Review

Set in the Pacific and Russian theaters of WW2, Call of Duty: World at War is built on the CoD 4 engine. But is it as good as Modern Warfare and previous titles in the CoD series? Find out in our review!

The ratings system for games has been screwed for years. Only real tukey score less than 50%, most reviews are clustered around 80-90.

The gaming media are pretty constrained by advertising revenue so this isn't really a surprise.

You can usually get a better idea of a game's quality from the text in the review, and if you are going to spend $50 on a game you really should read a few complete reviews.

» why 89%??
when reading your verdict, you sound like you're satisfied w/ the game, not fascinated by it. Why would you give a score of 89% for that? your rating system doesnt seem to make much sense? love the site, your benchmarks & hardware reviews are top notch, but your game reviews dont add up.

Because, as we said in our verdict, its not a bad game; It's just not very original. Also, the fact its set in WWII hurt it as well. It's a solid 'B' game. Still fun, but not very innovative or original.

» Power level servers ruin it
Adding to your local stats complaint they stupidly allowed admins to decide how many points you get for a kill. This has lead to half the populated server list being "power level" servers where you get 4000 points a kill (i.e you will reach max level after about 35 kills).

Anyway completely ruins the level up experience as everyone is lvl 65 after about 10 mins. Real shame as they had added prestige for the PC too (if you can be bothered you can get lvl 10 prestige in a couple of hours).

Oh and the respawn locations are utterly appalling - you will randomly respawn right in the middle of large groups of enemies. This completely ruins tactics of trying to defend a spot or carefully clear and advance through enemy positions, because at any moment they could respawn directly behind you and shoot you in the back.

Other then that it's quite a good game - like COD 4 but with a number of the most annoying bits tweaked (e.g. dogs > heli, martyrdom no longer so effective, etc).

You're right, I hate that as well. I thought about including it, but ended up not because I felt people could always try not to play on them.

Then again, a lot of the servers I jumped on tended to have it enable, so maybe I should've.

Once again, Activision farms IW's work out to a third party that finds some way to screw it up. Basically a good game, but allowing players to alter the values awarded in an RPG system is like letting WoW players grind to lvl 80 in one day by playing on a hacked server. Doesn't do much for the overal continuity of the community.

I agree. I hated those power-level servers, even though I'm guilty of getting up to level 2 prestige through them... =/

well, i'm sure you didn't have a problem loading up another review website with your gazillion times 10 splooge fest, nair (shout out yoshi) powered, slices and dices, bigger than kid rock's ego, of a super machine.

Some reviews do come out fairly soon after the game release (see left 4 dead). I'm just thankful they've turned out some reviews lately so I didn't have to see the madden one at the top every time i visited this page. Firingsquad is not the most informative website, nor the most up to date, but they try at what they do and it's a fun, laid back site, which is why I check it everyday and will continue to do so. Take it for what it is.

Thanks guys, we try to do what we can here. We might not get every release, but we'll always try to get something up when we can.

As for Soldier36, don't worry about him. He's just upset we didn't review Far Cry 2 and give it our new "Walk around for 3 hours doing nothing" Award. It's just a habit we have of not reviewing games that are not worth our time. ;-)

FiringSquad is rather low on employees and is doing everything it possibly can with such few resources. Cut them some slack.

eh, the stupid scripted parts in the first russian level killed my enthusiasm for this game. don't automatically kill me when i don't shoot the sniper like you want me to, if i hit him i expect him to die and me to progress. don't even get me started on the burning building... i'd take 10% off just for that.

I always enjoyed Call of Duty's scripted parts. It just gives this awesome cinematic quality that further intensifies an already intense game. Some games are fine open-ended, nonlinear, etc. but Call of Duty has always succeeded thanks to its strictly linear, rail-shooting, scripted sequences that present an amazing tale.

i agree, but the ones in this game, especially the ones i mentioned, are so poorly done. i wanted to bash my head into the wall by the end of the few hours (!) it took me to get through those short sequences.

i dunno, this whole game just feels like a cheap knock-off...
