» ATI Windows 7 drivers lack DX9 card support

As Fudzilla reports, ATI has dropped Windows 7 driver support for a number of DX9 cards. According to the ATI support page, the list of GPUs affected include:

ATI Radeon 9500 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
ATI Radeon X550 Series
ATI Radeon X600 Series
ATI Radeon X700 Series
ATI Radeon X800 Series
ATI Radeon X850 Series
ATI Radeon X1050 Series
ATI Radeon X1300 Series
ATI Radeon X1550 Series
ATI Radeon X1600 Series
ATI Radeon X1650 Series
ATI Radeon X1800 Series
ATI Radeon X1900 Series
ATI Radeon Xpress Series
ATI Radeon X1200 Series
ATI Radeon X1250 Series
ATI Radeon X2100 Series

Instead of providing regular updates for the aforementioned GPUs, end users can use the standard ATI display driver included with Windows 7, or you can use ATI's Vista driver under Windows 7.

Earlier this year ATI re-classified these DX9 parts as legacy-only products. This means they no longer receive monthly driver updates, instead driver updates are provided on a quarterly basis. Apparently that won't be happening for Windows 7, although you should be able to run the Vista driver under Win7 with no problems (although technically ATI says this is unsupported).

People are atucally getting worked up over this? It's not like you get a black screen in W7. You'll have a perfectly functional driver for your older hardware, you just won't get any optimisations for newer games, which those cards won't run anyway.

Agreed. Your older cards will work fine in W7. You just won't have access to Catalyst Control Center anymore.

I found this out when they stopped "supporting" the X1550 I had in my HTPC. However, I upgraded to an HD4550 so I would have access to the adjustments CCC offers (my display was off-center) and it turns out the adjustment wasn't available on the 4550 either, even though CCC was!

I won't say it was a total waste of money to upgrade because it does play a newer generation of games, but upgrading did not add the features that had once been present in XP/Vista.

I thought that these older cards didnt require a separate driver when you installed Win 7 as the driver would be already included. I mean it already recognizes my 4890 although adding newer drivers does improve the performance considerably. I dont think there is any point to adding extra drivers for these older cards as they more then likely have reached there full potential driver wise and installing drivers would not improve performance in any way.

BTW i have the x800xt and x1800pro so i have cards affected but when i did the benchmarks there was no appreciable difference with the drivers included with Win 7 and those drivers you can install from ATI.

I dont know why people would use this as an excuse not to get ATI GPUs.

Um, so? They are legacy products anyway. Why is this news?

Some of those DX9 cards run new games without difficulty and use PCI-E so work in any modern motherboard.
As vista failed a number of users have stayed with XP a long time and are now looking to go straight to 7. Ati doesn't support them.

It's like nvidia refusing to support 7 series graphics cards which still have plenty of grunt (being as the 360 effectively has a 7 series card in it).

Nice spin, but the reality is that the current WHQL drivers you get via MS update are completely stable and current. Continuing development on drivers for 4 generations back of product is silly. At this point the drivers are mature. They'll also release updates via Windows Update if there is something that warrants the driver update. Just the newest Catalyst drivers won't support them.

Kerrick i think you dont have a clue do you. Just because ATI dont make new drivers it doesnt mean that the cards no longer work, they work fine and because they are old cards they have reached there full potential driver wise, so there is no point installing new drivers from ATI because the drivers included in Win7 are already the best drivers available.

Why should ATI waste time updating drivers for negligible improvement in performance for those old cards?

And thats nice if nvidia does still provide drivers for there old cards, however i doubt that the those drivers would make any real significant performance improvements over those already included in Win 7.

If that was your reason for people to stop buying ATI GPUs its pretty lame

Like I said, not all computer users are worried about playing modern games, or games at all. Why should they have to throw out a perfectly good card and buy a new one.

And nvidia does still support the geforce 6 series cards in their newest win7 drivers.

Not really. Geforce 6 series are the same way, they use the WHQL driver released via Windows Update rather than a discrete download and install. Geforce 7 will be discontinued as soon as their next gen Fermi architecture is released. The only real difference is ATI had their next gen product out first so the older products were phased out first.

In addition, how many people expect to play modern games at even bad settings with an X1800? I know someone who replaced his over a year ago with an 8400GS. You can get a DX10 capable card for under $50. So why don't you go cry me a river? I suppose ATI could continue to expect users to pay $600 for their fastest card, then they'd probably have the money to develop older drivers longer... But I think most would rather get a current card at a better price. Heck, the 4850s still floating around are $80. Not to mention you're on a GAMING site. Don't cry to me about severly out dated hardware.

just another reason not to waste money on an ati card then if they refuse to support their products. nvidia is still supporting their older cards.

because the majority of ati users still are using dx9 or earlier cards. They need drivers to use them.

You think everybody should just throw their perfectly fine cards in the trash and go out and buy new dx11 cards???

The only 2 cards that can play modern games at reduced settings are the X1800 and X1900. None of that other old hardware has the muscle to do anything.

Also, the support is just unofficial. It doesn't mean it won't work... The Vista drivers will work just fine. I have an old x1800 that Windows 7 recognized instantly and installed a working driver.

This is just something for people to say "Hey, that is not fair, I dont agree with that!"

that is ridiculous. Gamers only make up a small portion of computer uses. And a very small portion of these older cards. Just because you have a newer card does not mean that all these people should run out and buy a new one. AMD not supporting their products is just plain laziness. It's not like it would take them months and months of developement to create drivers for these cards.

If you'll notice, nvidia is still supporting their older cards with updated drivers.

Maybe at least gaining support for DX10 would be nice and right now pretty cheap.
