| » Not as good as some might think. Personally, the game gives me a headache. It's mainly because the game doesn't get more interesting as you go through it. In fact, I wouldn't consider it to be a good game at all. Here's a few reasons why I say this, btw I haven't finished the game.
#1 RPG games must have a story, and this doesn't have it. Hell, the quests aren't that interesting either. About 90% of quests are essentially run shot, except in a certain direction.
#2 The environment is horrible. I know that it's a wasteland, but it looks like someone took a crap all over it. At least in Fallout 3 you got to see interesting sights. This game feels like you're moving through a garbage dump.
#3 The lack of speech from NPCs is annoying. This game does a good job with the voices, but you get so little of it. Especially love the southern accent. Would it hurt them to have all the quests read to you? In Fallout 3 they did.
#4 The game gives a feeling like it's trying to compensate with the graphics. I mean, why cell shading? This was something Sega did a lot with the Dreamcast, and it was forgotten. If you ignore the cell shading, the game has weak art.
#5 The other things I notice is the typical crap you find in most games. Can't drive vehicle past certain points, due to invisible walls. Can't walk past certain places with invisible walls.» Login to reply to this KuuL (32) Nov 02, 2009 - 09:43 am
| You're trying to play the game as an RPG, when it is clearly a FPS with some very lite RPG elements.
This game is a first person looter, first and foremost. It is not an RPG by any means.
There is a very thin story, but the main drive is to get better loot, exactly like Diablo 2. If you don't look forward to getting the next bigger, shinier weapon, this game will be boring for you.
The art is fantasic btw, it really stands out from the rest of the realistic FPS games out there. Crank the graphics way up, it looks really good.» Login to reply to this DukeNukemX (8) Nov 05, 2009 - 12:38 am
| The loot is nice, but having it as the only driving force is kinda weak. I like to call this the Megaman effect. What's the driving force for you to keep playing? To get the biggest baddest gun there is.
Though in Megaman games, especially Megaman X games, game play itself was there. In MMX games you could play as Zero, which was a completely different experience. In Borderlands, everyone uses a gun, but gets World of Warcraft like additions. Very homogenized really.
FPS shooters or RPG, good games have a good story. This game is a little of both.
Graphics isn't the issue with the game as much as concept and artwork. BTW, I did beat the game and I finally got to see a different environment. Too bad it was short lived.
My suggestion is that, it's a nice game when the price drops. If you haven't played Fallout 3, then get that instead.» Login to reply to this

| | What little I read about this game before reading the review just now had me thinking it would be a Fallout3 clone. But the review has me thinking Fallout3 with more RPG elements and that sounds cool. » Login to reply to this

| Ehhh... I'd say it has less RPG elements than Fallout 3 had. There are no complex quests with moral decisions, or stats to mess around with. It's more FPS than RPG; the RPG elements are very very lite, but that's not a bad thing. Think Diablo 2 with guns and you'll have a really good idea of what to expect.
Borderlands has simple quests (just like Diablo 2), there is lots of loot management (just like Diablo 2), and the main focus is on running and gunning. Don't expect a complex RPG with this game, you'll be disappointed if you think it's like Fallout 3. It's similar, mainly due to the "wasteland" theme, but other than that, this is a First Person Looter and nothing more. Which I happen to love.

| | KuuL has it right. This is a shooter first and RPG second. More RPG elements than games like Wolfenstein, FarCry 2 and RE5. But still much less than Fallout 3. But Borderlands is a better shooter than Fallout 3. And it supports co-op. » Login to reply to this |

| i've been trying out some new things with the structure of the article, what do you guys think? do you like the sections dedicated to controls, MP, or consolitis (if applicable)? previously they had been mixed in with the rest of the gameplay stuff.
by the way, the formatting is largely out of my hands. just sayin', 'cause i'd be tweaking it a bunch to make it look just right. ;)» Login to reply to this

| Hey Jacob,
I think the way you broke out the sections and specifically mentioned consolitis problems very helpful for potential buyers. I would like to see more reviews have these general sections going forward, especially the consolitis section. Be sure to continue mentioning if the problem can be fixed by tweaking a config file, as you did in this article. That will be useful information for many.» Login to reply to this |

| » I agree wholeheartedly I have nothing more to add that could enhance this article. Everything Jacob mentions is spot on.
Definitely tweak your config files to remove mouse smoothing, the FOV thing, and make zoom a toggle option, it really enhances an already amazing game. There are a few other tweaks as well, but those are the major ones.
And while Single-player is fun, the most fun will be had playing with 4 real life friends. Make sure to turn off the "always on mic" through the config files so you can use Vent or Teamspeak without an echo from the ingame voice chat (which is always on unless you disable it as mentioned above).
Seriously, play this game with 4 friends, it makes everything harder (badasses are tough to take down in a 4 player game), and the loot that drops has a higher chance of being better than if you were playing alone.
Level 28 Zerker that specialized into melee damage. Last night I found a class mod that increases my melee by +72% plus adds +2 and +3 to a few other melee skills. I was punching things for 1k each hit, and critting for 4k-7k, as fast as I could click my mouse. And my character was laughing and screaming the whole time, so funny.» Login to reply to this
